MASTERS STUDENTS AT THE PGIS

Masters degree programmes are offered at the PGIS under following categories

Masters by course work (1 year) [Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) Level 9]
The ‘Masters Degree by course work’ can be obtained by completing course work only (without conducting any research project).

Master of Science (2 years) [SLQF Level 10]
In addition to the requirements for the ‘Masters Degree by course work’, the ‘Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree’ requires a research project of one year duration. The minimum duration of the entire programme shall be 24 months.

Most programmes are conducted generally during week-ends.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
A Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medical Sciences and Technology or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized university, acceptable to the PGIS. Those who are awaiting results of their final degree examinations may also apply.

MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMMES SCHEDULED TO COMMENCE IN JUNE / JULY 2021
The deadline for for the receipt of applications for Masters programmes listed below 30th June 2021 . The programme fee can be paid in full or in two installments (50% at the registration and 50% at the beginning of the second semester) or in three installments (1st installment at the registration, 2nd installment after 4 months from the date of registration and 3rd installment after 8 months from the date of registration).

The programme is designed to provide the geologists, engineers and other scientists a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of engineering, geological and hydrogeological principles. In Sri Lanka, at present, there is a growing need to improve infrastructure facilities with particular reference to construction of buildings, roads, railways, bridges, sub-way tunnels, overpasses, etc., and to develop energy and water resources to meet the requirements of an increasing population. It is important to emphasize that these goals could be achieved only by those having a sound knowledge of geological principles and their applications to civil engineering practices. This programme will be conducted jointly with the Department of Geology and the Department of Civil Engineering.

This Masters programme is uniquely designed to train students from a range of disciplines - physical and biological sciences, geography, engineering, medicine, veterinary science, agriculture, management, IT/ICT, architecture, social sciences, surveying, defense, etc. The programme will give an all-round knowledge of GIS, Remote Sensing and GPS, and will also cover current technological developments in those areas. It is designed to produce high quality graduates who will be able to solve local, regional and global problems using GIS and Remote Sensing. Visiting experts from foreign countries conduct several course modules both locally and abroad.

The programme facilitates to gain a comprehensive knowledge in ICT providing its participants the understanding in concepts of the information and communication systems, and technologies applicable. At the completion of the course, candidates will be able to effectively use the knowledge in ICT to take up managerial positions covering wide range of fields such as education, business, finance and creative industries in addition to core computing disciplines.

Masters programme in Pharmaceutical Botany will provide effective knowledge on plant species with pharmaceutical importance and their usage, and train students towards development of new commercial pharmaceutical products through innovative research and to disseminate recent advancements in Pharmaceutical industry with hands on experience.

A sound knowledge in Science and Technology of materials is necessary for the efficient use of materials in industry. The broad aim of this Masters programme is to provide a basic knowledge in Physics of Materials with emphasis on technologically important materials and newly emerging area of nanomaterials and nanotechnology. This programme will train graduates required for various industries and also to improve the knowledge and skills of personnel already employed in the industrial sector.
