M.Sc. Students at the PGIS.............

M.SC. PROGRAMMES ARE OFFERED AT THE PGIS UNDER FOLLOWING THREE CATEGORIES

M.Sc. by course work (1 year) (#1)
The ‘M.Sc. Degree by course work’ can be obtained by completing course work only (without conducting any research project).

M.Sc. by course work and research (1.5 years) (#)
The ‘M.Sc. Degree programmes by course work and research’ are of 18 months duration and consist of taught courses (2 semesters) and a 6 month research project, which is generally industry/job oriented. Postgraduate diploma programmes are of 12 months duration and consist of only taught courses. Most programmes are conducted generally during week-ends. A limited number of scholarships will be available based on Semester-I performance.

M.Sc. by research (2 years) (#2)
In addition to the requirements of the ‘Masters Degree by course work’, the ‘Masters Degree by Research’ requires a research project of one year duration. The minimum duration of the entire programme shall be 24 months.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
A Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Surveying or any other equivalent qualification from a recognized university, acceptable to the PGIS. Those who are awaiting results of their final degree examinations may also apply.

M.SC. PROGRAMMES SCHEDULED TO COMMENCE IN APRIL/MAY 2018
The deadline for the receipt of applications for M.Sc. programmes in Gemmology & Industrial Minerals, GIS & Remote Sensing and Engineering Geology & Hydrogeology is 7th February 2018.
The deadline for the receipt of applications for all the other M.Sc. programmes listed below is 28th February 2018. The programme fee can be paid in full or in two installments (50% at the registration and 50% at the beginning of the second semester) or in three installments (1st installment at the registration, 2nd installment after 4 months from the date of registration and 3rd installment after 8 months from the date of registration).


This M.Sc. programme is designed to train analytical chemists who could contribute in many diverse areas such as food and beverage industry, pharmaceutical industry, healthcare, environmental control, agriculture, etc. covering quality control, research and development work and manufacturing processes in industry, university and other research laboratories.

This M.Sc. programme provides computer science/non-computer science graduates an advanced knowledge and training in information technology. At the completion of the programme, the candidate is qualified to seek a career in any computerized enterprise or a research or educational institute or to pursue higher studies.

The programme is designed to provide the geologists, engineers and other scientists a sound theoretical and practical knowledge of engineering, geological and hydrogeological principles. In Sri Lanka, at present, there is a growing need to improve infrastructure facilities with particular reference to construction of buildings, roads, railways, bridges, sub-way tunnels, overpasses, etc., and to develop energy and water resources to meet the requirements of an increasing population. It is important to emphasize that these goals could be achieved only by those having a sound knowledge of geological principles and their applications to civil engineering practices. This programme will be conducted jointly with the Department of Geology and the Department of Civil Engineering.

This M.Sc. programme encompasses environmental aspects of all areas of science. It covers advanced training in air pollution, water pollution, environmental impact assessment, cleaner production, waste management, etc. It is intended for those aspiring to become environmental scientists and managers, and also for those who need to improve their skills and knowledge.

The M.Sc. programme is designed to provide the graduate student with the necessary theoretical and practical background in fish and wildlife management. It will provide the necessary background to the fish and wildlife managers as well as to those who are involved in research in these fields.

This M.Sc. programme trains professionals in the exploitation and processing of precious materials and industrial minerals in Sri Lanka through selection, design, recognition, technical analysis and acquisition. The programme provides an advanced knowledge in the natural processes pertaining to the formation of gems or minerals /precious stones/semiprecious stones and quantification of mineral resources.

This M.Sc. programme is uniquely designed to train students from a range of disciplines - physical and biological sciences, geography, engineering, medicine, veterinary science, agriculture, management, IT/ICT, architecture, social sciences, surveying, defense, etc. The programme will give an all-round knowledge of GIS, Remote Sensing and GPS, and will also cover current technological developments in those areas. It is designed to produce high quality graduates who will be able to solve local, regional and global problems using GIS and Remote Sensing. Visiting experts from foreign countries conduct several course modules both locally and abroad.

This M.Sc. programme provides an adequate coverage of important aspects of chemical industry including chemistry, basic concepts of chemical engineering, chemical technology and industrial economics. The necessary practical training will be provided in areas relevant to chemical industry.

This M.Sc. programme deals with developing mathematical models, finding solutions and interpreting the results of problems that come up in industry. The programme in designed to provide graduates with an adequate knowledge in mathematics, statistics, operations research and scientific computing and to provide opportunities for research in applications of mathematics to existing problems in industry.

Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are fast growing areas of science and technology which span the entire spectrum of science and technology including next generation electronics, engineering materials, advanced materials and coatings, devices, computers, medicine, textiles, sports equipment, polymers, biology, agriculture, etc. The study programme will prepare the student to take the challenge of meeting not only national needs in diverse areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology but also to continue toward advanced studies anywhere in the world.

A sound knowledge in Science and Technology of materials is necessary for the efficient use of materials in industry. The broad aim of this M.Sc. programme is to provide a basic knowledge in Physics of Materials with emphasis on technologically important materials and newly emerging area of nanomaterials and nanotechnology. This programme will train graduates required for various industries and also to improve the knowledge and skills of personnel already employed in the industrial sector.

M.Phil./Ph.D. Research Degree Programmes
M.Phil./Ph.D. (full-time) research degree programmes in several disciplines are also available throughout the year under the following Boards of Study:

Registration and Tuition Fees (M.Phil./Ph.D.): Rs. 30,000/- per year.
In addition, candidates are required to pay research project expenses, which may range from 50,000 to 200,000, if not covered by a grant.

M.Phil. programmes are typically of 2 - 3 years duration and Ph.D. programmes are of 3 - 4 years duration. Deserving students may qualify for Research Assistantships offered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other agencies, which would also cover the registration and tuition fees.
